American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons

A podiatrist/podiatric surgeon is a physician devoted to the medical treatment of disorders that impact the foot, ankle and lower extremity. The name, Podiatrist, originated in North America, and has become the accepted term for all practitioners of podiatric medicine worldwide. Podiatrists are the only medical professionals who exclusively specialize in treating the foot and ankle.

In the United States, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) are physicians/surgeons who treat the lower extremities, which primarily entails the feet and ankles. Training for most podiatrists includes four years of undergraduate work, and then four years in an accredited podiatric medical school. Their training is completed after a 2 or 4 year surgical residency.

Worldwide, podiatrist refers to health professionals who specialize in the treatment of the foot and ankle. The majority of Podiatrists in these countries are specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of foot pathology. However, not necessarily through surgical means unless via further training they qualify to perform reconstructive foot and ankle surgery. Training and Certification is different in the US in that American podiatrists who hold a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) have already completed surgical residencies in surgical treatments of the foot and ankle.

Treatment options for Bunions is dependent upon the severity of the condition as well as the patient's health and activity level. Most often, bunion surgery is performed near the big toe joint. The bony overgrowth is surgically removed and the bone is fractured to allow realignment of the joint ultimately resulting in the straightening of the big toe joint.

This surgical treatment option allows the patient to walk on the foot almost immediately but activity must be significantly curtailed for several weeks following the surgery. Typical post surgery guidelines stipulate that the patient remain home from work for at least 1 week with the foot in an elevated position.

Orthotics involve a prescribed foot orthosis which is brace inserted within the patients shoe designed to correct abnormal foot and lower extremity problems. Once correction is achieved, the prescription foot orthosis should reduce the strain on impacted structures in the foot and lower extremity resulting in pain reduction. In regards to long term benefits, prescription foot orthoses prevent future complications from occurring in the foot and lower extremity by reducing deleterious forces from acting on the foot and lower extremity. A prescription foot orthosis is referred to as a 'foot orthotic'.
